THAILAND SHOWS 600% INCREASE IN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY USE FOR ONE YEAR!

The Energy Ministry recently announced that use of alternative energy sources in Thailand rose dramatically in 2006 jumping to 3% from 0.5% in 2005. The rising trend of alternative energy is expected to continue as the Ministry aims to have alternative energy sources account for 4.7% of total energy usage next year according to the Energy Policy and Planning Office.

Increases will come from Renewable Energy sources such as wind, hydro-electric power, biomass, gasohol and waste material. In total these sources are expected to produce some 2,234 megawatts of electricity. Other renewable sources will contribute 900,000 litres of ethanol and 500,000 litres of bio-diesel per day. The Thai government’s
Long-range objective is to boost alternative energy usage to 8% by the year 2011.
